UN Calls for Accelerated Global Response as DRC Ebola Spreads Rapidly

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – United Nations humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher has urged immediate international action amidst the expanding Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which now covers six provinces. Fletcher informed UN member states that the epidemic is progressing at a pace faster than previous Ebola outbreaks. He called on governments and donors to boost funding and guarantee access for humanitarian efforts. This appeal comes as health teams are battling increasing cases, insecurity, and immense strain on medical infrastructure in eastern and northern regions of the nation.

UN urges faster global action as DRC Ebola outbreak spreads
DRC Ebola response expands as health authorities confront rising cases across six provinces.

On September 1, the World Health Organization reported that the outbreak had surpassed 6,000 confirmed cases, with nearly 3,000 fatalities. The epidemic now impacts 60 health zones across Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Bas-Uélé, and Tshopo provinces. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described it as the second-largest Ebola epidemic in history and the fastest-moving outbreak recorded. Ituri remains the primary transmission hotspot, contributing most cases since the outbreak’s onset.

The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus and was initially identified in May 2026. WHO classified it as a public health emergency of international concern. As of August 26, the agency reported 5,794 confirmed cases and 2,786 deaths in the DRC, before the total exceeded 6,000. By that date, 1,293 people had recovered. Authorities continue active surveillance, contact tracing, laboratory testing, clinical management, and community engagement across the affected regions.

Conflict and fragile health systems hinder Ebola response efforts

The Ebola crisis occurs amidst a broader humanitarian emergency in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Fletcher highlighted that nearly 11 million individuals require humanitarian aid due to conflict, displacement, food insecurity, and malnutrition. Violence in parts of eastern DRC has impeded access for health and relief workers. The United Nations has intensified its response since activating an emergency mechanism on June 9. Additionally, operational humanitarian hubs have been set up in Bunia and Beni to support field activities.

Healthcare workers on the frontlines face significant dangers. Fletcher reported that over 40 health workers have lost their lives to Ebola, and treatment centers and ambulances have suffered attacks. Earlier WHO data indicated 151 confirmed infections among health and care personnel, including 44 deaths, by July 30. Emphasis remains on infection prevention, safe clinical practices, and enhancing protections for responders. WHO also pointed out that unidentified transmission chains and deaths outside treatment facilities further complicate efforts to contain the outbreak.

Funding boosts and vaccine research intensify as cases climb

The updated 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan for the Democratic Republic of the Congo allocates $2.1 billion, with $300 million designated for Ebola-related initiatives. Fletcher appealed for increased and flexible international funding to support both the outbreak response and broader humanitarian efforts. WHO has also stated that a government-led six-month Ebola response plan requires $1.3 billion. The organization has urged member states to accelerate contributions to expand surveillance, treatment capacity, laboratory services, community outreach, and other vital public health measures.

On September 1, WHO provided revised vaccine guidance as researchers explore options against the Bundibugyo virus. The agency noted that current evidence is insufficient to confirm whether the licensed Ervebo vaccine offers significant protection against this Ebola species in humans. It recommended administering the vaccine only within research protocols while further clinical trials are conducted. WHO and Africa CDC continue supporting the Congolese government’s response efforts, focusing on case identification, transmission interruption, and community protection across the six impacted provinces.
