BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – Europe is on course for a record-setting year in wind power capacity additions, having added 8.8 gigawatts (GW) in the first half of 2026. This represents a 30% rise compared to the same period last year. As per the latest industry data published by WindEurope, the turbines commissioned recently generate enough electricity to supply roughly 7 million European households and displace fossil fuel imports equivalent to 25 liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers annually. Europe’s wind installation activity during the summer months has accelerated the continent’s energy transition, pushing the region toward a historic milestone.

Germany led the regional expansion during the first six months of 2026, contributing 3.4 GW—about 40% of all new European wind capacity. Over 500 individual turbines were installed across Germany, including 423 onshore units and 84 offshore turbines. Several other European nations, such as Denmark, Poland, Portugal, and France, also saw significant capacity growth. Notably, Ukraine added more than 400 MW of operational wind capacity despite ongoing conflicts, while Belgium installed an additional 60 MW to its grid.
Forecasts published in WindEurope’s Autumn Report project that by the end of 2026, total European wind capacity will reach 24 GW, setting a new record for annual installations. This expansion phase is expected to serve as a crucial step toward an industrial goal of 30 GW in yearly additions during the 2030s. During the first half of the year, investments in new wind farms across Europe totaled 9 billion euros. Additionally, national governments awarded over 17 GW of capacity through competitive auctions, with another 26 GW scheduled for tender before the year concludes.
Germany Continues to Lead Regional Growth with Over Three GW Installed
Despite impressive installation figures, industry representatives have issued warnings about ongoing structural bottlenecks that threaten long-term growth. Germany, for instance, expedited its deployment by granting permits for more than 9 GW of onshore wind capacity in the first half of 2026. Meanwhile, permitting volumes declined in key markets like Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Ireland. While wind power deployment continues to grow, industry leaders stress that bureaucratic delays in grid connection approvals could hinder project completion timelines.
In a public statement accompanying the report, WindEurope CEO Tinne Van der Straeten commented that 2026 might set a new record for wind installations, but also cautioned that maintaining momentum depends on several factors. She highlighted that forthcoming government decisions on administrative permitting, auction design, grid infrastructure expansion, and industrial electrification will be decisive in whether the sector sustains its current pace of growth.
Onshore turbines account for the majority of new capacity additions
To sustain current expansion levels, WindEurope recommends five key policy priorities for EU authorities and national governments. These include streamlining permitting processes and expanding transmission infrastructure across regions. The organization also advocates for channeling Emissions Trading System revenues into industrial electrification initiatives and establishing a binding renewable energy target for 2040. Based on current projections, total European wind capacity could reach 436 GW by 2030, providing 27% of the EU’s electricity needs.
European ministries and energy regulators are expected to review these policy suggestions during upcoming ministerial meetings ahead of the winter heating season. Official trade portals will continue to track national turbine installations and auction outcomes to monitor compliance with the EU’s decarbonization goals.
