VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – Austria is in the process of preparing BEACONSAT, its inaugural military satellite and the largest spacecraft developed domestically so far. This satellite aims to identify and examine signals that interfere with global navigation satellite systems such as GPS and Galileo. Austria intends to launch BEACONSAT in February 2027 using a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The project’s goal is to detect jamming and spoofing signals from orbit and to collect data on where and when navigation signals are disrupted.

Designed as a technology demonstrator, BEACONSAT is part of an extensive multi-year research and development initiative. GATE Space, a space technology enterprise based in Schwechat, is leading the BEACONSAT project and overseeing the entire mission. Established in 2022 as a spin-off from TU Wien, GATE Space develops chemical propulsion systems enabling satellites to perform maneuvers in orbit. For BEACONSAT, the company provides the propulsion system, satellite structure, and thermal regulation technology. GATE Space has conducted over 8,000 hot-fire engine tests near Vienna Airport under both atmospheric and vacuum conditions.
Core Satellite Technology Comes from Austrian Firms
A number of European companies contribute vital systems to Austria’s first military satellite. Graz-based IGASPIN supplies technology for detecting and analyzing GNSS interference with high accuracy. Denmark’s Space Inventor provides additional satellite components, including the onboard computer. The project integrates commercial space hardware with systems specifically developed for the BEACONSAT demonstration mission. Austria’s Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure has supported GATE Space through Austria Wirtschaftsservice with approximately 750,000 euros in funding.
The European Space Agency supports and co-funds the initiative via its ESA Marketplace program, which promotes technology demonstrations. This framework enables commercially available space technologies to be tested for security-related applications. Austrian officials describe BEACONSAT as a demonstrator, not an independent operational satellite program. The mission aims to collect information about interference affecting satellite navigation signals from orbit, which will feed into Defence Ministry processes as Austria advances its military space capabilities.
Austria’s Space Efforts Expand with BEACONSAT
The Austrian Defence Ministry is creating a dedicated organizational unit focused on space services, including satellite communications, navigation, and reconnaissance. BEACONSAT is part of this evolving framework, with a specific emphasis on navigation interference. The ministry’s military space strategy envisions the Austrian Armed Forces moving beyond merely utilizing space services to actively operating space infrastructure and systems. Austria adopted this strategy in 2023, with plans extending beyond 2035 for its implementation.
The launch scheduled for February 2027 remains on track, with a Falcon 9 set to carry BEACONSAT into orbit. Once deployed, the satellite will collect and analyze GNSS interference data as part of its research mission. The project unites Austria’s Defence Ministry, GATE Space, and various European technology firms. BEACONSAT will mark Austria’s inaugural military satellite mission, testing domestically developed systems designed to monitor disruptions to GPS, Galileo, and other satellite navigation signals.
