AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – In July 2026, Austria recorded only 244 new first-time asylum requests, marking the lowest monthly total in a decade. This represents a roughly 65% decrease from 697 applications in July 2025, according to Austria’s Interior Ministry. When combined with subsequent applications, the total number of asylum filings for July reached 840. These latest figures demonstrate a sharp downward trend in asylum submissions across Austria during the first seven months of the year.

Austria asylum applications fall to decade low in July
Austria reported 244 first-time asylum claims in July, the lowest monthly level in a decade.

Between January and July, Austria received 5,743 asylum applications, a significant drop from 10,442 in the same period of 2025. This decline of approximately 45% from the previous year reflects a substantial reduction in new claims. The reported totals encompass various types of applications, whereas the July figure of 244 specifically pertains to original first-time claims. Austrian officials publish monthly asylum data that distinguish these categories, aiming to clarify the number of new versus repeat filings.

Syrian nationals made up 267 asylum applications in July, making them the largest nationality group for that month. The ministry indicated that most Syrian applications involved children born in Austria, rather than newly arrived individuals. Austria has also kept restrictions on family reunification in specific asylum cases. So far in 2026, authorities have recorded 60 related entries, compared to 853 during the same period in 2025.

Fewer returns and border apprehensions are reported

During the first seven months of 2026, Austria experienced more departures than new first-time asylum applications. By July’s end, 8,856 individuals had left the country through either voluntary departures or enforced removals. This total included 4,615 removals and 4,241 voluntary exits. Additionally, authorities completed 392 transfers under the European Union’s Dublin system, which allocates responsibility for processing certain asylum claims among participating nations.

Border apprehensions in Burgenland, located in eastern Austria, have also decreased when compared to previous years. From January to mid-August 2026, authorities recorded 339 apprehensions, a sharp drop from nearly 16,000 during the same period in 2023. The Austrian Interior Ministry linked this decline to enforcement efforts and cooperation with neighboring Hungary. Austrian police have also taken part in Operation Fox, a joint initiative targeting migrant smuggling and irregular border crossings.

Asylum submissions continue to decline in 2026

This July’s figures follow a period of reduced asylum activity during the first half of 2026. Austria registered approximately 5,000 asylum applications in that six-month span, with departures surpassing new claims. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner presented these statistics as part of the government’s latest migration report. The country also maintained voluntary return programs for Syrians, with 240 Syrian nationals leaving Austria in July, according to authorities.

The new data show a clear year-on-year decrease in both original first-time applications and overall asylum filings. July’s 244 initial claims marked a decade low, as highlighted in the government figures, while the total for the month was 840. The period from January to July saw 5,743 applications, significantly below 2025 levels. Austrian authorities consider these figures part of their ongoing efforts to monitor asylum and migration trends, providing separate data on applications, departures, transfers, and border apprehensions.
