Spain Experiences Record-Breaking Summer Temperatures as Heatwave Days Reach 61

MADRID / RankWire.AI / – Mainland Spain recorded its warmest summer since the beginning of official records in 1961, with an average temperature of 24.5 degrees Celsius over June, July, and August. The national meteorological authority’s official data confirmed that seasonal temperatures exceeded the 2025 record by 0.3 degrees Celsius and were 2.4 degrees Celsius higher than the 1991–2020 climate baseline. This unprecedented summer saw extreme heat events stretch across two-thirds of the meteorological season, marking a historic high.

Data from the State Meteorological Agency reveal that the country experienced an extraordinary total of 61 heatwave days during these three months. This figure significantly surpasses the previous record of 41 heatwave days set in summer 2022. Experts highlight that all ten of Spain’s hottest summers have occurred in the 21st century, indicating an accelerating long-term warming pattern across southern Europe.

The severe heat put immense pressure on public health and municipal infrastructure throughout both northern and southern regions. The Carlos III Health Institute’s epidemiological mortality data suggest that over 5,000 deaths between June and August can be directly linked to extreme heat exposure. This is the highest toll recorded since the health agency began tracking heat-related mortality systematically in 2015.

Rising temperatures caused critical environmental stress across forest reserves and rural farmland. According to the European Forest Fire Information System, approximately 296,000 hectares of land have been destroyed by wildfires through early September. Prolonged dry conditions, exacerbated by the hot summer, drained regional reservoirs and created substantial operational difficulties for agricultural irrigation and hydroelectric power plants.

Monitoring stations recorded that these extraordinary heat conditions extended well beyond the usual summer months. On September 2, a station in El Granado, in the southwest, measured a peak temperature of 45.7 degrees Celsius, tying the national record for September’s highest temperature in Spain. Forecasters confirmed that elevated heat persisted from late May into early September across multiple autonomous communities.

Following the release of official meteorological data, government ministers presented the findings to parliament to advocate for enhanced environmental protections. Minister for the Ecological Transition Teresa Ribera urged parliamentary groups to back comprehensive legislation aimed at climate adaptation, emergency infrastructure, and drought resilience initiatives.

Meteorological agencies and public health authorities will continue monitoring temperature trends and environmental impacts throughout the autumn. Official statistics and environmental records will remain accessible via government portals as authorities assess long-term adaptation strategies. Regional agencies also coordinate resource management plans to address ongoing impacts on agriculture and the environment.
