EU Records 37% Reduction in Irregular Border Crossings through July 2026

WARSAW, POLAND / RankWire.AI / – Preliminary data from European Union sources indicate a 37% decline in irregular border crossings during the first seven months of 2026. According to Frontex, there were approximately 61,000 detections at the bloc’s external borders from January 1 to July 31, representing a decrease compared to the same period in 2025. The majority of key migration routes experienced fewer crossings in this timeframe. These figures serve as the latest indicator of irregular entry activity across the EU’s external frontier.

The Eastern Mediterranean remained the most active route, with 20,232 detections, reflecting a 28% reduction from 28,068 recorded last year during the same months. The Central Mediterranean followed with 16,454 detections, which is a 55% drop from 36,656. Collectively, these two routes accounted for about 60% of all detections included in the EU’s total entries. Libya continued to be the primary departure country along the Central Mediterranean route throughout the seven-month period.

In contrast, the Western Mediterranean saw an increase, with 11,217 detections—up 37% from 8,175 in the previous year. Sea crossings on this route reached 8,648, compared to 7,096 in 2025. Land detections through June totaled 2,569, up from 1,079. The Western African route declined by 60%, totaling 4,682 detections. Crossings through the Western Balkans fell 26% to 4,910, while detections at the Eastern Land Border decreased 44% to 3,209.

Mediterranean pathways lead EU border detection figures

Separate statistics for Channel crossings toward the United Kingdom reveal another significant decrease. Frontex recorded 22,469 attempts or successful crossings leaving the EU, representing a 46% decline from 41,647. These Channel crossing figures are not included in the EU entry total. Additionally, Frontex reported 281 detections on the circular route to Albania, which is a 9% increase. The seven-month figures exclude exceptional incidents at the external border in Ceuta, Spain, at the end of July.

Frontex based its analysis on preliminary EUROSUR data and estimates available as of Aug. 4. The agency notes that subsequent revisions are possible as authorities update their information. The statistics represent detection counts rather than unique individuals, so a single person may appear multiple times after crossing at different locations or on separate occasions. This distinction is crucial when comparing route totals with the overall number of individuals involved, as it applies across the agency’s external-border dataset.

Seven-month data extend the decline observed in the first half of 2026

The current figures reinforce the pattern identified after the first six months of 2026, when Frontex reported over 49,000 irregular border crossings—also a 37% decrease year-on-year. During that period, detections on the Western Mediterranean were 17% higher than the previous year. The seven-month comparison shows a 37% increase in this route. Meanwhile, the Western African route experienced a 67% decrease through June and a 60% decline through July.

Frontex reports that approximately 3,800 officers are deployed at the European Union’s external borders, assisting national authorities in border management and life-saving operations at sea. These officers also support member states in implementing rules under the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum. The latest data reveal uneven trends across different routes, with most major corridors experiencing significant declines, except for an increase along the Western Mediterranean pathway.
