By analyzing extensive weather data and sophisticated computer models, researchers compared today’s hotter climate with a scenario where temperatures were 1.4 degrees Celsius cooler. They found that soils in western Europe are now five times more likely to be extremely dry than in a world without human-induced warming. In eastern Europe, the likelihood of soil moisture deficits has increased elevenfold. The analysis also revealed that exceptionally high evaporative demand observed from April to June in western Europe was about 80 times more probable. This shift means that rainfall shortages that previously would not have caused severe drought now result in much drier soils.

Dominik Schumacher from ETH Zurich stressed that the tendency for abnormal soil drying already appears in spring before summer begins. He explained that as temperatures rise, the atmosphere’s thirst intensifies rapidly, extracting vital moisture from rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and the land itself. The combination of a relatively wet start to the year followed by extreme heat created ideal conditions for widespread wildfires. Rapid land drying increased the risk of fires, contributing to severe outbreaks across multiple countries.
