Frontex Reports a 35 Percent Drop in Irregular Crossings into EU

BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – During the first eight months of 2026, the number of irregular border crossings into the European Union decreased by 35 percent compared to the same period in 2025. The European Border and Coast Guard Agency, known as Frontex, released preliminary data indicating roughly 75,000 illegal crossings between January and August. This overall downward trend across key maritime and land routes reflects increased cooperation in enforcement with origin countries, proactive maritime patrols, and stricter coastal surveillance at major departure points.

According to statements from the Emirates News Agency, the Eastern Mediterranean and Central Mediterranean migration corridors remained the most heavily trafficked routes into Europe, accounting for nearly 60 percent of regional detections. The decline of 35 percent in irregular border crossings into the EU is largely credited to central maritime enforcement operations, interdiction efforts, and repatriation campaigns carried out by authorities in Libya and Tunisia, which have curtailed vessel departures along the Central Mediterranean routes.

Despite overall decreases along major European transit routes, agency reports indicate ongoing volatility as human smuggling groups adapt to increased border restrictions. The Western Mediterranean corridor, which serves mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, was the only significant route to see growth, rising by 34 percent compared to the previous year. The continued reduction in crossings into the EU by 35 percent is partly due to intensified maritime policing in Morocco, which has caused smuggling networks to shift departure points eastward toward the Algerian coast.

Overall Crossings into EU Decline by 35 Percent, Says Frontex

The route from Western Africa to the Canary Islands saw the sharpest decrease among all monitored maritime pathways, with detections dropping by 58 percent to approximately 5,100 arrivals. Officials linked this decline to joint maritime patrols conducted by Mauritanian and Senegalese security forces in cooperation with European agencies. Meanwhile, on the Eastern Mediterranean route, total detections fell by 25 percent to over 24,200 arrivals, with most maritime activity centered along the corridor connecting Libya to the Greek island of Crete.

Frontex’s Executive Director Hans Leijtens noted that while border traffic generally peaks during summer, August recorded only 10,700 detections across all EU borders. This period also marked the beginning of the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum, which implemented uniform screening procedures, mandatory biometric data collection, and standardized document checks at external borders of member states.

Mediterranean Sea Routes Continue High Operational Activity

Cross-border movement through the English Channel toward the United Kingdom dropped by 43 percent, with total detections falling to 26,600. Border authorities have warned that, despite these reductions, human smuggling networks persist in operating heavily overcrowded and unseaworthy vessels across open waters. International humanitarian groups stress that maritime crossings remain perilous, with reports of significant loss of life across Mediterranean routes recorded throughout the year.

Frontex will continue deploying personnel and resources to support national border enforcement efforts and manage incoming migrants. Detailed statistics, monthly migration route analyses, and border management reports will continue to be accessible through official EU portals. Additionally, international law enforcement agencies maintain surveillance of maritime activity to disrupt human smuggling operations along busy coastal corridors.
