BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – Euro area annual inflation increased to approximately 3.3% in August 2026, up from 2.9% in July. The month saw a significant rise in energy costs. Eurostat issued the preliminary estimate on Sept. 1. The inflation rate was 2.8% in June and 2.0% in August 2025. Consumer prices grew by 0.4% from July, according to the harmonised index of consumer prices.

Euro area inflation reaches 3.3% on August energy gains
Euro area inflation rose to 3.3% in August as energy prices recorded the strongest increase.

Energy recorded the highest annual rate among the main components at 14.3%, compared to 10.3% in July. On a monthly basis, energy prices increased by 2.9%. Inflation in the services sector slowed to 3.0% from 3.3% in July. Prices for non-energy industrial goods rose to 1.2% from 0.9%. Inflation for food, alcohol, and tobacco remained steady at 1.2%, with no change from the previous month.

Adjustments removing certain categories showed smaller fluctuations during August. Inflation excluding energy stood at 2.2%, unchanged from July. The rate excluding energy, food, alcohol, and tobacco decreased slightly to 2.4% from 2.5%. Inflation excluding energy and unprocessed food dropped to 2.1% from 2.2%. These measures track consumer price changes after specific components are excluded from the overall inflation index.

Energy inflation accelerates while service sector inflation slows

In August, inflation rates varied significantly across the 21 member countries of the euro area. Lithuania reported the highest estimate at 5.8%, followed by Cyprus at 5.2% and Bulgaria at 5.1%. Spain registered 4.5%, Belgium 4.2%, and Luxembourg 4.0%. On the lower end, Estonia saw 1.3%, Malta 1.9%, and Finland 2.4%. Germany’s inflation was 2.9%, with France at 2.7% and Italy at 3.2%.

Monthly price movements also differed among nations. Belgium experienced a 2.1% increase, Luxembourg 1.8%, and Cyprus 1.5%. France and Bulgaria each saw a 0.8% rise from July. Ireland, Spain, and Malta each increased by 0.6%. Finland saw a monthly decrease of 0.4%, while Slovakia’s prices remained unchanged. Germany rose by 0.2%, and Italy saw a 0.1% increase.

The euro area now includes 21 member countries

Bulgaria joined the euro area on Jan. 1, 2026, expanding the group to 21 countries. Data through December 2025 reflect the previous 20-member composition, while figures from January 2026 onward account for the current 21-nation membership. The European Union’s statistical framework applies a chain-index formula when the euro area’s composition changes. Consequently, the August flash estimate captures the current 21-country structure of the single-currency zone.

The August data remains preliminary, with comprehensive harmonised consumer-price figures scheduled for release on Sept. 17, 2026. The next flash estimate, which will cover September’s inflation, is set for Oct. 2. The harmonised index measures how consumer prices for goods and services change over time. Annual inflation compares prices to the same month one year earlier, while monthly inflation tracks price changes from the previous month.
